Asian Continental Championships 2013

So the ACC has been over for a week and I finally got time off from Real Life to talk about it.

First, a quick round up of the players, the decks and how they did:
Rank Name - Deck Prelim GWs Prelim VPs Final VPs
1 Bann - Mummify
(Spell of Life ft. Halim Bey)
1 7 3
2 Stephen - Saulot Puppeteer
(Spirit Marionette ft Saulot)
1 6.5 0
2 YY (Me) - Ladies & Gentlemen
(G4/5 Ventrue Grinder)
1 4 1
2 Nomura-san - (G2/3 Thrown Junk Bruise Bleed) 1 4.5 1
2 Hidetoshi-san - (Stanislava et al) 2 8.5 0
6 Fadzuli - (G2/3 !Malk Vote) 1 4
7 Fay - The Scarlet Letter
(G1/2 Toreador Aching Beauty)
1 4
8 Johann - Traditions of the Camarilla
(Gangrel Vote)
1 3
9 Ayukata-san - Al-muntaqim, the Avenger with his Catiff friends that multi-rush
(True Brujah Combat)
0 2
10 Troy - (Blood Brothers Torrance Circle Combat) 0 1.5
11 Jared - (Cock Robin Toolbox)0 1.5
12 John Ferdie - (!Tremere Toolbox) 0 1
13 Arsenio - (G1/2 Toreador Vote) 0 1
14 Keith - Dirty Money (Giovanni Weenie Bloat & Bounce ft Acquired Ventrue Assets) 0 0.5
15 Aaron - (G2/3 Lasombra Vote) 0 0
16 Lucinio - (Euro Brujah) 0 0
17 Kristine - (Tremere/!Tremere Combat ft Muaziz) 0 0
17 John Worrall - Isouda de Blaise Multiact 0 0

I think I did pretty well this time around, with much less mistakes (at least major ones).

Round 1
Aaron -> Bann -> Fadzuli -> Me -> Kristine

It was unfortunate that Kristine's main deck combo did not work the way she expected it to (old card vs new text) and she was ousted fairly quickly by me. I think I had Mary Anne Blaire, Victor Donaldson, Mustafa the Heir and Graham Gottesman out by that point. Since I had the majority votes, Aaron and Fadzuli could not do much, so I just kept bleeding into Aaron and bouncing bleeds over. Unfortunately, I could not oust Bann before time ran out.

1GW + 2.5VP

Round 2
Me -> Hidetoshi-san -> Nomura-san -> Jared -> John Worrall

I got off to a shaky start for this game (note to self: take out Juniper from the deck. She has a cute ability, but the lack of votes hurts like crazy), drawing only 3 titled vampires and getting Victor Pelletier when I went fishing for more (another note to self: take out Victor P from the deck. He is the only vampire I cannot get for free with Govern) and starting off with no bounce and no wakes. Fortunately, John was not able to oust me before I finally drew into some bounces.

The game lasted for an hour and a half with no one being ousted. I was unable to bleed Hidetoshi-san for big amounts (dude packs way too many bounces) and he managed to stealth past Nomura-san's defenses before I could oust him. Then John lost all his minions to combat from both sides and he was ousted by Jared. I managed to convince Jared to send all of Hidetoshi-san's minions into torpor, but time ran out and I had to settle for 0.5VP.

Stephen commented that the amount of combat on my table was ridiculous and hoped he didn't have to sit down with us at any point during the event. Guess he reckoned without Murphy's Law.

1GW + 3VP

Round 3
Stephen -> Me -> Lucinio -> Fadzuli

I hate sitting downwind of a Spirit Marionette deck! Between that, Saulot, Neutral Guard and Heidelburg Castle, I spent the entire game hunting and bloating. Stephen got into a pretty comfortable position with Saulot getting a Heart of Cheating and Mylan Horseed untapping him for various shenanigans. I finally had enough of the old man and got Pentex to park a van outside his apartment.

Then came the longest pitch for a deal I have ever had to do in V:tES. For a good half an hour, Stephen and I spent our time between turns trying to convince Lucinio to do the right thing. Of course, for Stephen, this meant for him to help remove Pentex Subversion as it would mean a weaker predator for him once I go into full defense mode. I, however, was convinced that if Stephen and he were to go one-on-one, Lucinio would not be able to handle Saulot and he should leave the Pentex alone while Fadzuli weakens Stephen.

When I talked to Lucinio after the game, he told me that when we first started pitching, my plan did sound better. I guess when he finally decided to burn the Pentex, it was too late for him. I bled him down to one pool and agreed to help Fadzuli oust Stephen if he would oust Lucinio with his KRC.

In the end, I could not out vote Fadzuli's minions and a Powerbase: Madrid and was ousted immediately after Stephen.

1GW + 4VP

Final Table
I managed to edge past Fadzuli and Fay in tournament points to get into the final table.

Unfortunately, it is now the wee hours of the morning and I don't think I can coherently talk about one of the most exciting finals I have ever played in, so I will continue in the next post.

Stay tuned!

The Eternal Struggle - 10 December 2012

Since the beginning of this year, the enthusiasm to gather and play have slowly wound down to a point where Stephen commented that he never got a game in before ACC Japan 2012. Trying to pick interest back up, we got together for a game late November 2012 and from there decided to try for a monthly play session.

So it was on the night of 10 December 2012, we met up at Gamersaurus Rex once again. Five Methuselahs shook off the inertia of torpor to once again continue the eternal struggle.

Game 1
Keith (Zombie Geeks ft. Anu Diptinatpa) ->
Me (River Snakes) ->
Fay (Kindred Spirits) ->
Bann (BB Kiev Circle) ->
Wei Yuan (G1/2 Tor/!Tor Celerity Close Combat)

I brought out Kahina, Halim Bey and Amenophobis and played a couple of Waters of Duats before being ousted by a bounced bleed of 3 and Anu's Mouthpiece Shambling Hordes.

Fay brought out Uncle George, Dolphin Black and Korah, and had a Good Thing(tm) going on for a while with Kindred Spirits, Eyes of Chaos, assorted stealthiness and Sleep Unseen. She managed to oust Bann and Wei Yuan before going heads up with Keith.

I took over for a while when she had to take a call.

Anu's shenanigans with Archon Investigation meant that I was stuck bleeding for only 2 per minion at some point. Ultimately, Keith overran the crazies with the *Power of Dominate*(tm).

Note to self: get rid of the Vessels. So. Not. Helpful.

Keith 3vp + GW
Fay 2vp

Game 2
Bann (Animalism Weenie with Dominate) ->
Keith (Giovanni SNS with Dragon Breath Rounds) ->
Fay (Kiasyd S&B) ->
Me (River Snakes) ->
Wei Yuan (Kindred Spirits)

I tweaked the Snakes after being ousted in game 1, removing all unnecessary actions, some overkill of stealth and a stack of Master cards. I was hopeful that this would be a better game.

Until I knew I was seating to the left of a Kiasyd S&B. Nucking Futs.

I felt a glimmer of hope when I saw 4 Deflections in my opening hand. Things went quite well until Wei Yuan decided to play Game of Malkav. I contemplated taking 3 pool with a fairly realistic chance of gaining that 3 pool, but was worried that I will not be able to oust Wei Yuan if he gained 6 pool. When the count was totaled, Wei Yuan lost 6 pool, I lost 5, Fay lost 4, Keith gained 1 (wuss) and Bann gained 3.

I thought with Wei Yuan at 8 pool and with 2 Deflection in hand, I could easily oust him. Except Fay decided to play conservatively. I managed to bounce a bleed of 3 (reduced by Wrong and Crosswise) and another bleed of 2, but was unable to generate the 5 bleed to oust my prey. Fay easily bled Wei Yuan and I out, and because Bann ran out of Deep Songs right at that moment, Fay cleaned up all the vps.

Fay 5vp + GW

Congrats Gerentt!

Congrats to Gerentt for winning his first Standard Tournament and making it into the TWDA! More on his win on his very own blog. Incidentally, that also qualifies him for the ACC. Now if only he can make it... :p

Going Off on a Tangent: A Game of Thrones LCG

So I've ran out of things V:tES for a while (yes, my vid of the ACC is months overdue, but I'm still learning the video edit software, so please bear with me), and will now talk about something that I've gotten into recently: the A Game of Thrones LCG by Fantasy Flight Games.

So Stephen went and got the game and have been itching to try it out. After setting up the pieces in the box, we had the following 4 players:
  • Bann (playing House Baratheon)
  • Stephen (playing House Targaryen)
  • Darren (playing House Stark)
  • Me (playing House Lannister)

This is the first game for me, and none of the other players have had more that a couple of games under their belts, so we were fairly noob at the game.

The first thing that happens in the game is the setup phase, where we all get 5 gold to spend on buying things prior to the actual start of the game. None of us got particularly good cards (or had some but had no idea what we were doing), and so setup was fairly unimpressive.

First round, I played a plot that made everyone's plot cards generate 0 gold. I thought that was a good move, which would have gotten me ahead, since I got a handful of stuff that cost nothing to play and either generated gold for me or gave me discounts on more stuff. Then Stephen went ahead and blew up my gold producing attachment (after telling me that attachments are particularly hard to get rid of *shakes fist*).

None of us were really sure what we were doing, so we sort of poked at each other just to see what would happen. I figured my strategy would be to keep a low profile by redirecting attention to everyone else. It kind of worked all the way up to right at the end.

Two and a half hours later, I convinced Stephen to pick himself as the first player for that round (winning initiative lets you pick who goes first) by telling him that he would have to go first or risk having Bann or I steal the win (first person to 15 power) from under him. I figured that that would allow me a shot at victory before Bann took his turn, which was quite important, given how close we all were (well, except Darren, but he caught some fairly tough breaks after a frighteningly opening few rounds).

Stephen decided to play it safe, since he was fairly confident that as long as he took a few shots at Bann, he could drag the game to the next round, where he might have a better chance. He smacked Bann around for a little and decided to call it a day.

Darren then took a few cheap power and took to defending in preparation for the next round.

Then my turn came around. We all calculated that my maximum power production was going to land me 1 short of the required 15 (I needed 5 more) and so I was not too much of a threat. Little did they know that I was hiding an event card (which could be played at any time) that could allow me to kneel a character and grab the last power I needed. I just had to plan my turn properly. I started with an innocent looking military challenge at Stephen, who decided that it was not worth his effort to block it. Darren had the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard title, which allowed him to redirect any unopposed (i.e. unblocked) military challenge to himself, but chose not to, netting me 1 power for an unopposed challenge (4 power to go). I then took a cheap intrigue shot at Darren, using stealth to get past his only legal defender, netting me 1 more power for the unopposed challenge (3 power to go). Next, I attempted a power challenge against Stephen who could not oppose it in any significant way. I forgot to read the card text on one of Darren's characters (i.e. minions) and he used its ability to get in my way.

And I made the biggest mistake of the game.

I completely forgot that I had a claim of 2 that turn (which means I would have been able to steal 2 power from Stephen if I was successful), so I used that event I had in hand to kneel (i.e. tap) Darren's offending character, giving him the power I would later need to win the game. Stephen then decided to oppose my challenge, depriving me of the one extra power to win the game.

Bann that powered a power challenge through me defenses to win the game.

*****

House Targaryen has a lot of big characters for reasonable cheap prices, but still takes a while to get its engine going. Late in the game, it takes a lot of effort to take down its characters, but it suffers from a limited ability to put significant number of characters in play at any one time.

House Lannister has a lot of tricks, but need a bit of planning to push for the win. It has a good mix of card and gold generating effects that help pay for stuff, but it lacks any truly impressive characters.

House Stark is out-and-out military. Smack the crap out of your opponents and stroll in for the power. The starter does run into a lot of problems with incomplete combos (no full playset of each combo) which greatly hampers its ability to rule the end game.

House Baratheon is also fairly tricksy. However, it requires influence to power most of its tricks and also runs into the problem of having too many of its power sitting with its characters instead of with the player (power on characters are lost together with the character).

All in all, I quite like the game, even if it takes a little long to play. Looking forwards to try it again, now that Stephen has done some deck tweaking.

Maybe I'll get a set myself *wink, wink*

  • Table 2. I know Gee Hwan got a game win, but I can't remember exactly what happened. Will update after I find my Archon file.
  • Table 3. Ben ousted Danz (who promptly went to take a nap... I guess it was a long day) for 1VP. Keith ousted Ben and timed out for 1.5VPs. Bann and Stephen both stuck around for an additional 0.5VPs.

Asian Continental Championship Singapore Qualifiers Finals

Sorry for the long delay, but here's the report from the finals.

After the dust from the preliminary rounds settled, 5 Methuselahs lined up for the final table.
  • Derek didn't have much of a choice, going into the final table at 5th position.
  • Keith chose to be bled by Derek, after having seen Derek's deck, and feeling fairly confident of his ability to stop Derek's bleeds.
  • My memory is a little vague on this one, but I believe Danz chose to bleed Derek, and Stephen inserted himself between Danz and Derek.
  • Robin then chose to be bled by Keith, knowing full well that he had exactly what was needed to completely stop Keith.
Le Fei's roll of a die set the final table in the following order:
Stephen's Forest of Blood bleeding Derek's Tremere/!Tremere Bruise Bleed bleeding Keith's Khazar's Diary bleeding Robin's Madness Network bleeding Danz's Toreador Toolbox.

Round 1
Round 2

Round 3
Round 4
Round 5
  • Stephen started on the Path of Paradox, and led with a bleed for 1 with Gharston, gaining the Edge. Chavi recruited a Procurer. and Papa Legba got the Treasured Samadji while one of the Tumnimos hunted again.
  • Derek got Ladislas to Govern Keith's Unaligned, but was blocked by Felix Hessian, resulting in some ghetto fighting. Selena tried bleeding for 1 but got slapped around by Ambrosius instead. Thelonius joined Derek's forces.
  • Keith Liquidated twice and used a Sudario Refraction to get back 2 copies of Khazar's Diaries and a Suadrio Refraction. Marciana added to the Diary and Chas recruited the Repo Man. Robin activated Rachel's Enkil Cog to bleed, but Sheila Telepathically Misdirected it to Stephen, who used his untapped Tumnimos to block.
  • Robin untaps and tries to have Henry Taylor Clan Impersonate a Malkavian. Rachel tries again to bleed Danz for 3. Danz Wakes Sheila Mezarin and sends the bleed to Keith with My Enemy's Enemy. Keith blocked using Repo Man, who dies. Victoria is now out.
  • Danz calls a Kindred Segregation with Sheila, successfully burning Felix Hessian and Ambrosius, though Keith paid to keep Carlton. Marcellus' attempt to effect a Parity Shift was blocked.
Round 6
  • Stephen teach Tumnimos Chimerstry. Papa Legba then bleeds for 2, but was Deflected to Keith instead. To keep the forward momentum going, Tumnimos bleeds with Fata Morgana. Chavi also bleeds with another Fata Morgana.
  • Derek plays the Barrens, then continues on to bleed lots. Thelonius bleeds for 1, followed by Selena bleeding with Governed the Unaligned. However, Selena's bleed was blocked by Carlton van Wyk, who shot Selena for 1 and dies. Ladislas bleeds with Govern the Unaligned and Conditioning for 6. Derek gets Brooke.
  • Keith Liquidates twice again, and tries to complete Kharzar's Diary with Cristofero. Rachel blocks with the right of the Second Tradition and loses Cristofero in a Mental Maze. Keith tries again with Mario and succeeds in bring Khazar's Diary to 7 counters, allowing Marciana and Chas to make some wraiths. Robin uses the Enkil Cog again to bleed with Rachel, who Impersonates Marcellus' Elder when he woke and attempted to block.
  • Robin bloats a little with Victoria's ability and plays the Madness Network. Henry Taylor gets himself a Carrion Coffin, using Form of Mist to slip past Keith's wraith. Victoria Impersonates the Giovanni and Rachel bleeds again for 3.
  • Danz got some pool back when Marcellus' used a Parity Shift to move pool from Robin. Sheila bleeds and effects an Aire of Elation for 3 pool loss. Robin uses the power of the Madness Network to have Henry Taylor equip with a Sport Bike and bleed Danz with Rachel.
Round 7
  • Stephen plays a brand new copy of Dreams of the Sphinx and, acknowledging that the end is near, bled with everything he had. Keith lost 2 pool from a Deflected Papa Legba, but the rest managed to land on Derek. Robin used Rachel to bleed, but Danz Forcefully Awoke Sheila and used her Telepathy to Misdirect Rachel to Stephen.
  • Derek used Thelonius to bleed for 1 and chose to leave the other minions untapped in preparation for Stephen's next wave of bleeds. Rachel's attempt to bleed using the Madness Network was sent to Stephen when Sheila got wind of it On the Qui Vive.
  • Robin bloats some more with Victoria and sets up a Powerbase in Zurich. Rachel bleeds and Victoria, the newly minted Giovanni, made a wraith using the magic of Khazar's Diary.
  • Danz ousts Stephen with a bleed from Sheila. Marcellus tried to block Rachel, but Lost her in the Crowds. Even his Enhanced Senses failed to penetrate her Cloaking.
Round 8
  • Derek bleeds for 1 for a bunch, and Rachel using Form of Mist to land a bleed past Marcellus.
  • Keith attempts to withdraw.
  • Robin sent Rachel out to hunt for blood, while Victoria proceeds to make more wraiths. Both wraiths bleed into Danz, and Marcellus could not prevent his master from being ousted even with a desperate cycling of cards. Henry then bleeds into Derek, but was deflected to Keith, causing Keith's withdrawal attempt to fail.
Round 9
  • Derek get a Visit from the Capuchin, but was unable to land a single bleed on Keith. Rachel calls on the Fifth Tradition to feed Henry, who attempts to bleed Derek. Rachel tries to Cloak Henry in an attempt to sneak the bleed past Ladislas, but a timely report from Keith's Channel 10 promptly put a stop to that.
  • Keith attempts to withdraw again.
  • Robin uses Victoria to make another wraith, and the three wraiths manage to oust Derek. Henry bleeds Keith for 1.
Round 10
  • Keith attempts to withdraw again, and manages to convince Robin to give him the chance to experience a successful withdraw attempt.
  • Robin does nothing.
Round 11
  • Keith's withdraw attempt is successful, netting him 1 Victory Point.
Final Result:
1st - Robin Pong with Game Win and 3 Victory Points in the final table.
2nd - Danz Holandez with 1 Victory Point in the final table
2nd - Keith Lee with 1 Victory Point in the final table

Photos from Singapore Qualifiers: Asian Continental Championships 2010 (Part 2)

As promised, more photos of the event.

Round #1 proved to be a slow one, maybe it is due to the rainy weather. Table 1 did not have any ousts. There were ousts on Table 2, but it was still not fast enough for anyone to get a game win.

There was a break for lunch after Round #1 timed out, and then there was Round #2, with a total of 12 Methusalahs. We had 3 tables of 4, and the games were ending much faster than Round #1. One of the tables actually had enough time to start a new just-for-fun game while the rest of the tables were fighting out!! Since it is only Round #2, do look out for more photos soon.

Table 1: Stephen's Forest of Blood
Unfortunately, he was the 1st on the table to be ousted (by Derek)

Table 1: Bann's Animalism WeeniesTable 1: Dzaki's Saulot Deck

Table 1: Yi Peng's Imbued Deck

He managed to oust Derek right after Derek ousted Stephen
Thus earning him 1VP

Table 1: Derek's G2/3 Tremere/!Tremere Bruise Bleed

Results of Round #1 Table 1: Game timed out at 2 hours with no game win. Derek got 1VP, Yi Peng got 1.5VP, Dzaki and Bann got 0.5VP each, while Stephen got 0VP.

Table 2: After the first few rounds of Keith's turn

Table 2: Keith's Khazar's Diary in full force, with many wraiths on the table

Table 2: Robin's Rachel Brandywine deck

Table 2: BK's Saulot Deck which managed to bloat successfully from a threatening pool size of 5 (Apparently no one noticed the burn clause on the Lord of Serenity card text and he got away)

Table 2: Fauzi's Assamite Deck

Table 2: Danz's Toreador Toolbox
Alexandra was his first vamp and Anneke was out quite late in the game

Results of Round #1 Table 2: Game timed out at 2 hours with no ousts. Keith, Robin, BK, Fauzi and Danz each got 0.5 VP.

We had new contenders in Round #2, namely Edward and YY. What were they playing?

Round #2: Table 1 (From Left - Stephen, Edward, Derek, Danz)

Table 1: Edward was playing a weenie DOM bleed deck
However, he was the 1st one ousted as most of the bleeds were being deflected to him from his predator

Results of Round #2 Table 1: Game ended in 55 min with Stephen sweeping the table giving him 1GW.

Round #2: Table 2 (From Left - Yi Peng, YY, BK, Bann)

Table 2: YY was playing his Cannon in D.

Results of Round #2 Table 2: Game ended 10 min after Table 1 ended. YY managed to use the power of the Daughters' singing to sweep the table and giving him 1GW as well.

Round #2: Table 3 (From Left - Fauzi, Robin, Dazki, Keith (and Elliot as spectator))

Results of Round #2 Table 3: This was the longest running table, and it was a tough fighting ground. Robin eventually managed to oust everyone and swept the table. 1GW for Robin!
